Foodies
One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Virginia Woolf
All too often, travel is associated with hurried dining at fast food outlets or familiar chain restaurants. While both of those options have their place on a road trip, it is far more satisfying to find local favorites and treat your taste buds to regional cuisine. If you think the only creative meals are found in large cities, think again. Some of my most memorable meals have been found in the most unlikely spots.
You can find unrivaled pies in the Arizona desert, incredible trout in a small, rural Utah community and fantastic wines just a short drive from amazing national parks and monuments. If you’re looking for an exceptional treat, try combining a visit to Mesa Verde with a winemakers’ dinner at the park’s terrific restaurant. Hiking to Anasazi ruins in the morning and feasting on great food and wine in the evening - what a combination! If you prefer something more western, try a vintage stagecoach ride and hearty steak dinner.
There is really only one essential for foodies. Bring along a good appetite and be willing to try something new. You’ve never tried a Navajo taco before? No idea what piki bread is all about? Well, it’s time to pack your bags and get going. And since there are so many wonderful places for a picnic, bring along your own gourmet feast and enjoy the panoramic view from places like Bryce Canyon.
