Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Design a list of every activity and sport you can imagine and it is probably available to you somewhere in the Southwest. Whether you prefer the adrenalin rush of rafting the Colorado River, hiking to Delicate Arch or just enjoying the colorful ascent of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, there is no doubt you’ll find plenty to do during your visit. The most difficult decision is deciding how to fit everything in to your schedule. Perhaps it is time to consider your own personal sabbatical.

Hiking is my first choice for exploring in the Southwest but it is followed closely by rafting and bicycling. While I don’t consider myself ‘gonzo’ level at any of these activities, it is important to go beyond my comfort zone and test my limits. Choose your own level of adventure and then push a little bit beyond. You’ll find that a little extra effort at busy destinations will lead you to some awesome discoveries. There are still quiet paths at Grand Canyon, uncrowded beaches at Lake Powell and solitary sunsets in Sedona’s red rocks.

Essentials:

Much of the Southwest is home to prickly plants, shin-busting boulders and other surprises. Be sure to dress appropriately for your trip. You’ll be grateful for the extra heft of good hiking boots or trail runners, a hat or cap, sunscreen, extra layers of clothing, plenty of water (lots of emphasis on this one) and nutritious energy snacks. Check out other helpful hints in each section.  REI is a great source for clothing and equipment for almost any sport. You’ll also get helpful advice and annual dividends if you become a member. I also like the Trails Illustrated map series for planning purposes.
